The SMACNA Training Center will present on “Good Design Practice for Rooftop Equipment Installation.”

The presentation will review the obstacles of installing roof curbs; including discussion and examples of ensuring a water tight seal, prevent infiltration of moisture, improper sizing of equipment and oversealing. This will also discuss structural support, designed duct size, connections available and the correct orientation of supply and return lines.

The meeting and lunch cost will be sponsored by SMACNA. Donations to ASHRAE research can be made at the meeting.

Presenter: Joe Potesta

Joseph J. Potesta is currently an instructor and an American Welding Society Certified Welding Supervisor for the Sheet Metal Workers Local 20 Joint Apprenticeship Training Committee (JATC). Joe completed the Sheet Metal Workers Local 20 Apprenticeship Program and graduated with a two year associates in Applied Science from Ivy Tech Community College. Throughout his 25-year career in this industry Joe has worked in the field for sheet metal contractors as an apprentice, journeyperson, field foreman, and safety supervisor.

In the field he applied his skills in problem solving by project management and coordination meetings, performed field measure and fabrication, installation, and trouble shooting. In 2006 Joe became an instructor for Local 20 and went on to complete his bachelor’s degree in Labor History from the National Labor College.

Currently Joe teaches apprentices, journeypersons, foreman, supervisors, and company owners in the following subjects; print reading, computer aided design, layout, fabrication, and installation in the areas of HVAC, Architectural, Industrial, Testing Adjusting and Balancing, and Service and troubleshooting. In addition to teaching hand skills Joe teaches safety OSHA compliant courses, First Aid/CPR courses, and Infectious Disease Control Assessment courses.

Joe’s completed certificates include American Welding Society Certified Welding Inspector and Test Supervisor, Certified Welding Supervisor, Architectural Wall Panel Installation and Design, Building Envelope, Lagging, Building Imaging and Modeling both Draft and Fab, Pipe Welding, Sheet Metal Welding, Structural Welding, Grinding and Polishing, Energy Auditing, Estimation, and HVAC Layout and Fabrication. Joe is constantly taking classes and obtaining certifications to stay ahead of the new technology that presents itself in the sheet metal industry.
